New teaching space in “The Hawthorne”

You’ve been asking for months! It’s finally here! David Hastings Studios is now open in Portland on Thursday and Friday.

David just signed a long-term lease and was handed the keys last Friday. (If only he would show his excitement…)

He will continue to teach in Salem on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The addition of the Portland Studio will allow him to expand his teaching, making him more accessible to actors, singers, and pianists in the Portland area.

The new studio is on the corner of Hawthorne and SE 33rd Avenue (not too far from Avenue Q!!). It is a bright and airy space, with great acoustics. And it’s in the heart of the Portland arts and theatre district.

David begins teaching there next week, August 11, and is planning an open house toward the end of the month for a grand opening.

Film at 11:00….

Can you find the man in the beans?

This is bizarre – after you find the guy – it’s so obvious. Once you find him – it’s embarrassing, and you think, “Why didn’t I see him immediately?”

Doctors have concluded that if you find the man in the coffee beans in 3 seconds, the right half of your brain is better developed than most people. If you find the man between 3 seconds and 1 minute, the right half of the brain is developed normally. If you find the man between 1 minute and 3 minutes, then the right half of your brain is functioning slowly and you might benefit from eating more protein. If you have not found the man after 3 minutes, the advice is to look for more of this type of exercise to make that part of the brain stronger! (Music is an activity that crosses the brain hemispheres, strengthening both sides!)

And yes, the man is really there!

New Kudos Page

Hey, check out the new Kudos and Awards page on the menu bar at the left. Lots of fun things happening in the education and careers of students. Let me know if I missed something or if you want me to tweak something. Keeping track of 60+ students is a challenge sometimes. I don’t want to miss your award, so don’t be shy. So proud of all of you!

Jon is a Rock Star!!

JonHastings_9408-2So it’s up and running. I’m excited. Thanks for stopping by to check it out. I wanted to start by saying thanks to Jon, my awesome website designer, professional fashion, magazine and portrait photographer, and oldest man child for all his hard work on this. This will be a more manageable site than the last, though I will miss it. Thanks Jon, for your hard work, and for helping your wanna be geek Dad through endless questions and meanderings! Love ya, man!

Curiosity Keeps the Cat on it’s Toes

Who ever said “Curiosity killed the Cat”? I think that’s an invention of mom’s who didn’t know what to do with the messes left behind by curious and inquisitive kids. Our rule: clean up your own mess! If you never make a mess, how will you ever learn or grow? I’ve been making a mess all day, on my computer, figuring out HTML and how to put this website together. I would never make it without my genius son, Jonathan only a phone call away. But I’m also struck by how much I’m using that I learned years ago when “playing” with Basic programming, data base files, and all kinds of other geeky stuff. The more you explore, the more data you have to bring to the equation when you need to solve a problem. I’m convinced that no curiosity is ever wasted. So get out there and ask questions!

New Recording/Teaching Studio Upgrade

Studio Update(repost from 3/20/10) Hey, check out the new teaching studio. In the process of refreshing the look, I’ve also added a simple recording studio. The studio is available to anyone who is looking for a place to record audition tracks or other materials. It runs on a Snow Leopard Mac with the full capabilities of Reason and Record! (Thanks, Kevin!). It also gives us the possibility of additional listening opportunities during lessons if that can be helpful.
