Rose City Swing Band hosting dances

Rose City Swing Band "Swinging Saxes"

The Rose City swing band has two upcoming dances in the next few weeks. April 27, at the Scottish Rite Temple in NoPo, the band will play for a fundraiser for one of our local Art Magnet Schools. The dance, from 8:30 to 10:30 will feature dance lessons with Stumptown Studios.

On May 12, 2012, RCSB will host their annual Spring Fling at the historic Oaks Park dance pavilion. Out Dancing will provide free swing dance lessons at 7:00. The band will strike up at 8:00 for a three hour dance to the tunes of Goodman, Ellington, Dorsey, and others.

For the past 14 months, David has played with the band at the keyboards, and also recently began singing and arranging for the band. Several of his arrangements are included in these programs.

So put on your dancing shoes and come “cut a rug” with the RCSB!

Tony Award Winner Pat Stanley

Opening night at Goldilocks. Pat Stanley (center) with her "People's Appreciation" award, joined by Kay Vega, producer, Ron Daum, director, and David Hastings, musical director.

Goldilocks opened this last weekend with a very special guest in the audience. Pat Stanley, who now lives in Walla Walla, WA, created the role of Lois in the original Broadway production in 1958. In 1959 she was awarded a Tony for her work at the ninth annual Tony awards, held in a hotel ballroom.

The original tony award was lost years back in a fire, and attempts to have it replaced by the Tony committee have been fruitless. So at the opening night performance, Lakewood theatre presented Mrs. Stanley with a “People’s Appreciation” award for her inspiration to singer’s and dancers in creating great roles throughout her career.

Perhaps the highlight of the evening, however, was the after party where the cast enjoyed sitting with the vivacious and gracious 83-year old star and was able to ask questions about her work in the early days of the Broadway stage. It was an evening that won’t be easily forgotten.

Lost Treasures Collection features “Goldilocks”

Leroy Anderson is best known for “Sleigh Ride” and “The Syncopated Clock”  two of his symphonic pieces originally commissioned by Arthur Fiedler for the Boston Pops Orchestra.  Less know is his 1958 Broadway musical, Goldilocks, with Don Ameche, Elaine Stritch, Russell Nype and Pat Stanley (who won a Tony for her role) headlining a stellar cast.

The story is of Max Grady, a early silent film maker, and his crew exploring the limits (artistically and financially) of this new medium.  Maggie Harris, a recently-retired Broadway star is pressed into service as Max’s leading lady.  The finances catch up the the fiancés and bring the show to a rousing Egyptian finale worthy of King Tut’s treasures.

The Broadway Lost Treasure collection is hosted by Lakewood Theatre.  The production is directed by Ron Daum, Produced by Kay Vega, and Musical Direction by David Hastings.   The cast includes Lisamarie Harrison, Mike Dederian, Alan Anderson, Kylie Clark Johnson, Darren Hurley, Joan Freed and Teresa Renee Lawrence.

Performances are April 20 and 21, 2012.  Tickets are on sale through the Lakewood Theatre Box Office.

Shoshana Bean at Staged! Master Class

Shoshana Bean was in Portland for a concert with Broadway songwriter and pianist Jason Robert Brown. Shoshana, a Beaverton native, is best known for her appearances on Broadway in Wicked and Hairspray. While she was in Portland, David was invited to be the accompanist for her Master Class, where she coached 11 singers in their vocal and performance styles. In her own way, she brought the best out of these singers by marrying their performance and their vocal techniques through this insightful workshop.
